There are common mistakes that you can make in the workplace that could destroy your career before you realise it.
It takes a lot of time and effort to make a success of your career but, unfortunately, you can destroy it all in the wink of an eye. There are many common mistakes that one can make in the workplace that could hamper your career.
Dishonesty is not always theft or fraud but a small white lie that could in the end cost you your job and reputation. Perhaps you think it’s not so bad to fabricate an excuse for not attending a meeting but if you are caught out, it could irreparably damage your career. Work relationships are built on trust but if this trust is compromised it could be impossible to restore.
Good relationships with your coworkers and managers are of vital importance to your career. You should try to maintain relations with your colleagues at all times. Take care, however, that such relations do not become too personal because that could also affect your career negatively.
Do not look for excuses for everything or blame other people. If you are inventing excuses all the time when you fail to hand in something in time it is going to affect your credibility and your colleagues and managers are going to feel that they cannot trust you. Blaming other people for your mistakes will also let you look unprofessional and unable to accept responsibility.
A place of work is a professional environment and not the place for discussing your personal problems with whomever wants to listen. It is important always to act professionally and to show that you are capable of doing your work in spite of personal challenges.
Do not get drawn in when some of your colleagues are gossiping about another colleague and remember to show good manners when you are at work. Your behaviour, your reaction to certain events, the way you dress and your social-media profiles can also contribute to destroying your career. Handle your colleagues with respect and do your best not to burn bridges behind you.
It is important to keep all of this in mind because only a moment of weakness can destroy your career.
